AddSearch Looks Like a Pretty Good Search Engine for Your Website

The Upshot

The Details

The Situation

  • The Brick River website search engine produces good, relevant results but is slow and does not have as-you-type results

The History

  • Years ago, all our customers used Google's Site Search. Ya can't beat Google, right?
  • Well, someone raised their hand at a user meeting several years ago and asked if there was a better search engine that Google. What was the problem with Google's Site Search?
    • It indexed your site only "every now and again" and that meant new content was not in your search
    • AND content that you wanted removed from your search was not removed quickly.
    • ALSO, it ranked OLD content higher than new content. So you're old events and old news were coming up higher than the new stuff
  • Brick River added a search engine to our system and it was good. It fixed the index issue and the date ranking issue BUT it is slower than we'd like and does not have as-you-type results.
  • Google discontinued their Site Search offering. And you couldn't even use it if you wanted.

To solve these issues, we started looking around at other search engines

  • Algolia is the market leader but their integration is difficult and their crawler service doesn't even have a price so it's got to be high.
  • We looked at many other players in the search engine space.
  • We happened upon AddSearch and saw that it was affordable for our customers, easy to integrate, and attractive.

We gave it a try and, as I sit here typing, there are three customers of ours who have started using it and it looks good

If you want to add AddSearch to your site

  • Follow the instructions below to sign up. You'd go to https://www.addsearch.com/, create an account, have it crawl your site(s), and then pay them. You want the $25/month ($29 if paid monthly) plan and then add the 10,000 documents extra ($25) IF your site has more than 10,000 pages. Many of our customers sites do, BUT if you've got small sites the $25/month plan will work. But if you tell them you're a nonprofit, it's less.
